Family Medicine
Providers who practice family medicine, also known as Family Practitioners, provide primary care to patients of all ages. Family practitioners diagnose and treat a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses, and provide education and therapies to prevent illness and injury. They often provide annual physicals, disease management, follow-up care for hospitalized patients, and minor surgeries that can be performed in an outpatient setting. A family practitioner may be an MD (Doctor of Medicine) or a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy). Physician Assistants (PA-Cs) and Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) also provide primary care under the direction of a physician.
